[Global Connect] ECRL: Early Track Completion Showcases China’s Speed

The track-laying ceremony for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a flagship project under the China–Malaysia Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), was recently held at Gombak Station in Selangor. A total of 519 km of track was laid by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), completing this key milestone nearly half a month ahead of schedule—once again demonstrating China’s infrastructure speed and quality to the world.

The Chinese construction team employed mechanized continuous track-laying technology using 500-meter-long rails and single sleepers, and introduced a digital, intelligent track management and dispatch system—a first for Malaysia. These advanced methods enabled the completion of 519 km of track in just 25 months, setting a new record for the longest single-phase overseas railway track-laying project by a Chinese enterprise.

As Malaysia’s first railway trunk line to efficiently connect the underdeveloped east coast with the capital’s economic belt, the ECRL will significantly cut travel and logistics times, reduce costs, facilitate industrial relocation, boost local employment, and promote balanced regional development across Malaysia. The railway will also link key ports along its route and strengthen Malaysia’s strategic position in Southeast Asia’s supply chain.
