China-Kazakhstan AI cooperation is bringing smart technologies into everyday life in Astana, as the Central Asian capital develops its artificial intelligence ecosystem with growing support from Chinese expertise.

The partnership spans urban transport, smart homes, robotics and startup development, with projects combining established Chinese technologies with local Kazakh language models. Astana’s new light rail system, for example, uses Grade of Automation 4 technology, allowing trains to operate fully without drivers. Nineteen driverless trains for the city are being produced in Tangshan, China, while local operators are receiving training in Tianjin.

AI-powered services are also emerging in residential communities, including smart parking and meters that automatically report electricity and water use and detect leaks.

Looking ahead, the International Center for Artificial Intelligence in Astana is offering free courses for students aged 12 and above, covering areas including IT, generative AI and creative technologies.

The cooperation builds on the Belt and Road Initiative and Shanghai Cooperation Organization, supporting Kazakhstan’s ambitions to strengthen its AI capabilities and connect more closely with China’s technology ecosystem.
