Guangzhou Metro Group has signed a 2 billion yuan (US$300 million) contract to operate and maintain Colombia's Western Tramway Project, marking a major step in its international expansion.

The 21.5-year agreement, signed with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, covers preparation, operations and handover services, alongside concession rights for commercial resources along the route.

The 40-kilometre line, with 17 stations, will link Bogotá with four municipalities in the Cundinamarca region. The first section is expected to open in October 2027.

The project will be the first rail transit system in South America to be independently managed by a Chinese company throughout its full lifecycle. It is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 165,000 tonnes over its operational period.
