Art is a language that transcends borders. A calligraphy and painting exchange co-hosted by China and Belgium recently took place in Brussels, drawing more than 90 art enthusiasts. The event featured works by over 30 art students from both countries—ranging from black-and-white ink pieces inspired by traditional Chinese techniques to colorful, expressive screen prints—combining academic rigor with visual appeal and showcasing the artistic talent and creative energy of the students.
University art teachers from both countries walked local Belgian audiences through the works and the history behind them, helping them appreciate the artistry of Chinese calligraphy and painting while grasping its cultural significance. Calligraphers on site also guided visitors in a hands-on ink session, recreating classic passages from the famous "Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion," much to the delight of local participants.
China and Belgium have pursued multiple cultural and artistic exchanges since 2020. This year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, lending special significance to the event. The organizers noted that presenting traditional ink art in an innovative way reflects China's blend of ancient and modern cultures, and expressed the hope that the event will inspire greater interest and connection for China among Belgians.
