Hong Kong has unveiled its first-ever urban farm at Ma On Shan Sai Sha Road Garden, marking a major step toward greener, more sustainable city living. Opened on October 11 by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the innovative project features a modern indoor multi-layer farming system that produces fresh salad greens, tomatoes, and strawberries to meet local demand.
Visitors can buy freshly harvested produce and take part in hands-on activities that showcase cutting-edge urban agriculture techniques. Officiating at the ceremony, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Food) Irene Young highlighted the initiative as part of Hong Kong’s strategy to promote sustainable agriculture and low-carbon living.
With its “harvest-to-sale” model, the farm delivers fresh, high-quality produce while inspiring local residents to connect with nature. Looking ahead, new urban farming projects – including rooftop hydroponic farms in Tin Shui Wai and Kwu Tung – are set to further transform Hong Kong’s cityscape.
