China’s lithium-ion battery sector is gaining strong momentum, driven by rising demand for smart devices and rapid technological advances. In the first quarter of 2026, output surged by 40.8 percent year-on-year, making the industry a standout contributor to industrial growth, according to official data.

Manufacturers are scaling up quickly to meet demand. A smart production facility in Heyuan, Guangdong, now produces tens of millions of micro lithium-ion batteries annually, with shipments exceeding 100 million units and revenue expanding at a rapid pace. With orders continuing to climb and production lines fully booked into the third quarter, companies are accelerating plans to expand capacity.

At the same time, breakthroughs in research and development are enhancing performance. Advances in solid-state technology have pushed battery energy density from just over 200 Wh/kg to as high as 400 Wh/kg, significantly extending applications such as drone flight endurance from minutes to hours.
