Shanghai recently hosted the two-day 2025 Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) Conference, showcasing a wave of cutting-edge solutions that underscore the country’s growing strength in neurotechnology. The event brought together leading university teams, industry innovators, and sector experts to deepen collaboration across research, application, and policy. A first-ever BCI competition featured four categories, from fatigue and emotion detection to brain-controlled robotic cars and arms, with 40 of nearly 100 participating teams earning awards. In the Industry Innovation Exhibition Zone, more than a dozen companies displayed technologies spanning the full chain of BCI development, from core hardware to clinical uses in sleep intervention, mental-health treatment, and rehabilitation for degenerative diseases. Exhibitors highlighted rapid progress, with one noting, “We’ve completed the first domestic clinical trial this March”. Shanghai also unveiled new innovation platforms within China’s first dedicated BCI industry cluster, with officials emphasising their focus on clinical needs and the opening of high-quality EEG (brain electrical activity) datasets to support enterprise research.
