[Inno & Tech] Guangdong's Single-Crystal Chips Outperform Foreign Rivals
: :

In wireless communications, filter chips serve as dedicated signal gateways. A typical 5G smartphone contains more than 50 such chips, which separate carrier frequency bands and filter out interference from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other wireless signals. For years, the global market for high- and mid-frequency BAW (bulk acoustic wave) filters was dominated by U.S. companies. Recently, however, a technology company in Guangzhou's Huangpu District has challenged that dominance with a fully homegrown solution.

The company's innovative approach—using single-crystal aluminum nitride to manufacture BAW filters—differs fundamentally from the polycrystalline process adopted by overseas competitors. The resulting chips deliver higher performance while consuming less power and reducing production costs. Having developed 12 semiconductor manufacturing systems in-house, the company is able to maintain consistent quality at scale. Its products have now entered the supply chains of leading global smartphone brands, demonstrating the growing competitiveness of "Made in Guangdong" and "Made in China."

Huangpu District is now home to dozens of integrated circuit (IC)-related companies, supported by a well-established industrial ecosystem and specialized division of labor. The district is committed to building a comprehensive industrial chain to further strengthen China's semiconductor industry and drive its high-quality development.
