[Inno & Tech] Chinese, German Team Deciphers Gene Behind Early Barley Maturity
: :

Chinese and German scientists have identified a key gene that enables barley to mature earlier while retaining its yield potential, marking a significant step towards developing crops better suited to changing climate conditions.

The discovery follows a decade of research at China's National Crop Genebank in Beijing. Barley varieties carrying the gene could give farmers more time to harvest crops and prepare fields for replanting, helping maintain stable agricultural production under varying environmental conditions.

The research presented considerable challenges, as barley's genome is more than 10 times the size of rice's, spanning 4.5 billion DNA base pairs. To pinpoint a single nucleotide substitution linked to early maturity, researchers cultivated and assessed numerous barley varieties at multiple locations.

The findings highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration, combining China's strengths in large-scale crop phenotyping and gene-editing technologies with German expertise in plant genetics.

The work could help advance the development of resilient crop varieties capable of maintaining reliable yields as climate conditions become increasingly unpredictable.
