[Tech Trends] China Advances Smart Farming to Boost Rural Revitalisation

China is accelerating the use of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in agriculture as part of a broader push to modernise farming and advance rural revitalisation, a key theme highlighted during this year’s “Two Sessions” meetings of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Officials say the integration of AI with agriculture will help strengthen food security, improve efficiency and support the country’s goal of building a strong agricultural sector. China’s crop cultivation, planting and harvesting mechanisation rate has already exceeded 73 percent, reflecting rapid technological progress in recent years.

Industry leaders say innovation will be crucial in the next phase of development. Liu Yonghao, chairman of New Hope Group, a leading animal feed producer and one of the largest private companies in China, pointed to breeding technology, smart farm management and technology-driven marketing as major growth areas. Genetic research is being used to improve livestock quality, while AI-powered systems can help farmers optimise production, reduce costs and manage operations more efficiently.

The government also plans to expand agricultural capacity, including initiatives aimed at raising national grain production by 50 million tonnes, while promoting the development and adoption of advanced agricultural machinery and equipment.
