Lu Wenrui / Founder of the FUTURE GBA Youth Film & TV Development Initiatives:
"For creative work, I see AI as a tool for execution rather than for thinking."
At its 30th edition, the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART) welcomed over 790 exhibitors from a record 38 locations and around 7,700 business visitors from 50 countries, while a themed forum explored opportunities for young filmmakers.
Guangzhou-based director Lu Wenrui, founder of the FUTURE GBA Youth Film & TV Development Initiatives, also presented a concept trailer created using AI.
Lu Wenrui:
"AI can handle technical aspects, but the conceptual side still depends on the creator. It’s something we must develop and structure ourselves.
By presenting concept trailers or visual ideas early on, audiences can understand the meaning and direction of a project, which naturally builds anticipation. With today’s AI technologies, many young filmmakers can move beyond past limitations like needing large budgets for special effects or complex shots. I simply couldn’t afford that before, but now AI helps make it possible."
Beyond individual creators, some in the industry are looking at how AI can reshape the entire production pipeline.
Sun Rong / Founder and President / Beijing DinoFilms:
"From planning to production and then on to marketing and distribution, every stage can form a complete chain where AI is integrated throughout. Compared with traditional animation studios, this can significantly reduce costs, while maintaining a solid level of quality.
Looking ahead, we hope to find many like-minded creators here who can use AI-generated methods, ranging from short dramas to AI combined with live-action, and even, potentially, full-scale AI films in the future."
With platforms like FILMART bringing together global industry players, such ambitions are becoming increasingly within reach.
Lu Wenrui:
"As a director working and living in the Greater Bay Area, we should step out and aim further. Platforms like FILMART allow us to connect with global buyers and technical partners, bringing new perspectives and ideas, and ultimately helping young filmmakers gain broader exposure."
