To mark International Horseshoe Crab Day on 20 June, the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong (OPCFHK) is bringing one of the world’s oldest creatures to the heart of the city. From 18 to 21 June, the Safeguarding the Lantau Intertidal Mudflat Biodiversity Exhibition will take place at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, inviting visitors to explore Hong Kong’s rich coastal ecosystems through interactive experiences. Open daily from 11am to 8pm, the free exhibition offers a rare chance to see live horseshoe crabs up close. Visitors can also enjoy immersive art and science displays inspired by Lantau’s mudflats, alongside hands-on workshops featuring wildlife-themed crafts. Hong Kong is home to two of the world’s four remaining horseshoe crab species, including the endangered tri-spine horseshoe crab. The exhibition highlights ongoing conservation efforts supported by the Lantau Conservation Fund, which have engaged more than 3,500 community members and helped remove nearly 1,400kg of marine debris. Since 2009, over 2,000 juvenile horseshoe crabs have also been reared and released through a partnership with City University of Hong Kong.
