[China Thrills] World’s Highest Bridge Opens: Huajiang Canyon Bridge Debuts in Guizhou

The Huajiang Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, now the world’s highest bridge, has opened to traffic. Spanning the dramatic Huajiang Grand Canyon, its main span measures 1,420 metres, and the deck sits 625 metres above the water—setting two new world records.

Construction began in early 2022, and builders overcame the canyon’s natural barriers using drones, intelligent monitoring, ultra-high-strength materials, and innovative construction techniques. Teams report achieving millimetre-level precision while working at heights of around 600 metres—a feat that transformed a forbidding gorge into a finished highway.

The bridge reduces a former two-hour detour between Zhenfeng County and Guanling County to just about two minutes. It is also poised to become a major tourist attraction: visitors can admire the engineering, enjoy water-curtain light shows, take sightseeing elevators onto the span, and try bungee jumping, rope swings, and other extreme activities—part of a broader plan to establish the bridge as a full-fledged travel destination.
