A zoo in Taiyuan City, capital of north China’s Shanxi Province, is rolling out enhanced winter measures as temperatures plunged to around –10°C on Tuesday.
To help cold-sensitive species cope, Taiyuan Zoo has fitted reptile enclosures with heat lamps and temperature-control systems, ensuring snakes, turtles, and other ectothermic animals stay warm and healthy. “Reptiles need additional heat lamps, air-conditioning, and high-energy foods during the winter,” said Zheng Yuwei, curator of the amphibian pavilion.
Tropical and subtropical animals, including elephants and hippos, are also receiving extra care. Indoor temperatures across their habitats have been raised to shield them from the cold wave, with keepers adjusting feeding and heating routines to keep every resident comfortable throughout the snap.
