[China Thrills] Beijing Ski Season Opens as China’s Winter Sports Surge

Beijing’s ski season is in full swing as temperatures drop, highlighting the rapid rise of winter sports across China since hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics. At the Yanqing Olympic Zone, the former Alpine skiing venue, preparations are well underway, with fresh snow being produced for a 6,000-square-metre beginner area to welcome an expanding crowd of first-time skiers.

“We’re seeing more visitors with children, teenagers and families,” said Liu Xiyao, the resort’s general manager. Despite being man-made, the snow meets Olympic standards, ensuring reliable conditions for all levels. A 14-km trail with a 925-metre vertical drop will also open this month, ranking among Asia’s largest.

Yanqing remains a favourite for Beijing residents thanks to its pedigree, scale and proximity. As one skier put it, “The snow quality is excellent”. With 748 ski resorts expected nationwide by year-end and last season’s participation rising 13 percent, China is on track to become the world’s biggest ski market by 2035.
