Southwest China’s Sichuan Province is experiencing a lively winter tourism boom, driven by a blend of expansive indoor ski centres and scenic high-altitude resorts. These destinations are pairing winter sports with local culture and cuisine, from snow hotpot to traditional games, creating fresh opportunities for rural development.

In Dujiangyan, a 50,000-square-metre indoor resort is drawing visitors with professional facilities, including an advanced 21-degree slope and seven runs for all skill levels. “The slopes are excellent… I never encounter icy patches,” said ski enthusiast Liu Fang. Families are also flocking to its 5,000-square-metre snow park, while new snow-themed activities and on-site hotpot add to the appeal. Manager Yu Ronghui said the venue now offers study tours, youth competitions, and themed packages to broaden participation.

In Aba Prefecture, outdoor resorts are flourishing. Wenchuan’s Qiangrengu Ski Resort, at over 3,200 metres, offers a four-month season, upgraded slopes, and performances showcasing Qiang culture. Nearby Heishui’s Dagu Glacier area has expanded into an “ice-snow plus sports plus culture” hub, featuring snowmobile rides, a 4,860-metre ski run, ice sculptures and VR experiences amid dramatic glacier views.
