Shanghai and Guangzhou have lit up their nights with a range of light and lantern shows, setting a festive tone ahead of the upcoming Spring Festival on 17 February.
In Shanghai, a large-scale light show illuminated the Lujiazui skyline, offering residents and visitors a vivid night-time spectacle. Along the Huangpu River, traditional folk performances such as molten iron fireworks added to the celebratory mood, while the Shanghai Library hosted Chinese New Year-themed cultural activities, including a traditional wedding ceremony and an intangible cultural heritage market.
Meanwhile in Guangzhou, the city’s annual Spring Festival lantern show opened at Yuexiu Park, marked by a 20-metre-tall lion head at the main gate. A total of 85 lantern installations are spread across 10 scenic zones, with galloping horse-themed lanterns highlighting the coming Year of the Horse. One visitor described the show as “really fun” and “worth experiencing”. The citywide lantern celebrations will run through 8 March.
