Crowds are set to flock to Hong Kong’s outlying island of Cheung Chau this May as the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival returns with its vibrant mix of tradition, pageantry and community spirit. Held from the fifth to the ninth day of the fourth lunar month, the festival is one of Hong Kong’s best-loved cultural celebrations and is recognised on China’s national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Visitors can look forward to lively lion dances, Taoist rituals, towering stacks of lucky buns and the famous piu sik parade, where children dressed as deities appear to float above the crowds. The festivities will also feature the popular Climbing Carnival on 10th May, offering games, performances and bun tower climbing demonstrations.
The celebrations will culminate in the Bun Scrambling Competition finals and prize presentation ceremony on 24th and 25th May, drawing competitors and spectators from across Hong Kong and beyond.
