The Hong Kong Film Archive will launch a special screening programme, “Journeys to the West: Cinematic Dialogues Across Time”, from June 27 to July 11, celebrating the enduring legacy of the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” through six iconic film adaptations spanning different eras and styles.
Regarded as one of the most influential works in Chinese literature, “Journey to the West” follows the adventures of monk Xuanzang and his disciples as they battle demons and overcome hardships on a pilgrimage for sacred scriptures. Blending fantasy, folklore and philosophical themes with vivid character portrayals, the story has inspired generations of filmmakers and artists. Rooted in Xuanzang’s real-life journey and later transformed into a rich tale of gods and monsters during the Ming dynasty, the cultural classic continues to resonate with audiences through evolving cinematic interpretations across Hong Kong and beyond.
Presented as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the archive and the 2026 Chinese Culture Festival, the programme will be held at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre and the archive’s cinema.
