Zhongshan's Caobian Village is a renowned hometown of overseas Chinese. The recently held ‘Caobian Night Banquet’ concert transformed the village into an enchanting open-air venue, where century-old watchtowers stood silhouetted against a softly lit night sky adorned with a radiant moon. Classic melodies resonated through the air, stirring waves of nostalgia among the audience.
The evening wove traditional folk music’s soulful harmonies together with dynamic light displays. Audiences were transported to scenes of ancient bridges spanning gentle streams and narrow lanes lined with bluish-gray bricks—a poetic narration of both hometown beauty and longing, rekindling an profound sense of belonging.
Today, Caobian hosts a large number of unoccupied ancestral houses, with only about 580 households residing permanently, which its overseas community exceeds 4,000 people. The concert’s installations—including a giant artificial moon—will remain through the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, enhancing the village’s timeless appeal, in hopes of welcoming more overseas Chinese back to the home they hold dear.
