[GBA Thrills] CUHK Expands Shenzhen Presence with Tech Transfer Hub

A new chapter in cross-border innovation has begun as the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) launched a technology transfer centre in Qianhai, designed to accelerate the journey from research to real-world application across the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The facility will transform CUHK’s academic strengths into commercially viable technologies, supporting China’s push for “quality productive forces” outlined in its 15th Five-Year Plan. This national strategy emphasises deeper integration between scientific research and industry, particularly between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Marking a major expansion of CUHK’s footprint in Shenzhen, the centre will focus on fields such as artificial intelligence, healthcare and cultural innovation. Early projects include AI-driven medical technologies, from speech therapy tools to robotics-assisted surgical solutions and elderly care services.

CUHK President Dennis Lo Yuk-ming said the initiative reflects a growing national focus on original innovation and cross-border collaboration. By tapping into Qianhai’s resources, the hub also aims to nurture start-ups, strengthen intellectual property protection and fast-track new technologies into the market.
