Guangzhou is advancing the standardization, brand development, and internationalization of signature agricultural products, including lychees and Simiao rice. Lychees, once a humble local specialty grown in Lingnan’s orchards, have evolved into a major industry with products sold around the world.
During Phase 3 of the Canton Fair, sampling authentic Lingnan flavors has become a highlight for overseas buyers. Lychee-derived products such as lychee wine and lychee-flavored milk tea toppings are particularly popular among many merchants, most of them made using Guangzhou-grown lychees as raw materials. In recent years, Guangzhou has identified Lingnan fruits, including lychees, as key modern agricultural industry clusters for development. The city provides full-cycle support for cultivation and implements rigorous quality control at the source.
Expanding overseas market access has boosted contract farming, providing stronger support for farmers’ income growth. One local wine exporter sells 100,000 bottles of lychee wine overseas each year. Together with domestic orders, the company purchases around 2,000 tons of lychees annually.
By connecting traditional agriculture with modern market channels, these niche local specialties are now reaching consumers far beyond regional borders.
