Cross-border travel between Macau and Guangdong reached a new milestone on Sunday, with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge recording five million trips by Macau-registered vehicles since the launch of the Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles scheme in January 2023.
According to Gongbei Customs in Zhuhai, more than 544,000 trips were made during the first four months of this year alone, reflecting growing demand for cross-border mobility in the Greater Bay Area.
The scheme allows non-commercial vehicles carrying only Macau licence plates to travel to Guangdong via the bridge without applying for a regular quota, significantly improving convenience for residents.
The pace of growth has accelerated steadily, with the jump from four million to five million trips taking just 217 days, compared with 334 days for the programme to reach its first million crossings.
Authorities have also continued enhancing customs clearance and joint inspection procedures to support smoother and more efficient travel through the bridge port.
