China has completed the installation of the world’s largest and most powerful offshore converter station, marking a major milestone for the country’s deep-sea wind power development.
Located off Yangjiang in south China’s Guangdong Province, the 25,000-tonne facility, known as “Heart of the Sea Wind”, was successfully installed and has now entered the final commissioning stage before full operation.
The station is the world’s first offshore converter platform capable of transmitting 2,000 megawatts of electricity at 500 kilovolts. Designed for large-scale offshore wind projects, it collects power generated by 163 wind turbines, converts alternating current into direct current, and enables efficient long-distance transmission with minimal energy loss.
Measuring over 80 metres in both length and width, and standing 44 metres tall, the structure is equipped to withstand harsh marine conditions.
Once operational, it will deliver clean electricity to Guangdong, helping reduce coal consumption and support the region’s low-carbon energy transition.
