[Global Connect] Micro Dramas and Vertical Videos Drive Global Distribution Trends
: :

Anish Mehta / Buyer from India:

"Over a period of next 6 to 12 months, there is a huge demand for acquisition of vertical format and bring it into many Asian languages. Yes, this is the future."

The Hong Kong International Film and TV Market, FILMART, took place this month, bringing together industry professionals from around the world to showcase content and explore new media directions.

For its 30th edition, FILMART welcomed over 790 exhibitors from a record 38 locations, connecting with some 7,700 business visitors from 50 different countries.

Among the emerging trends of micro-dramas and AI-generated content, vertical video was hugely popular.

Anish Mehta / Buyer from India:

"As a producer of content for last two decades, I think this is an amazing market for Southeast Asian content to bring to India."

This shift is also drawing in new participants, with international exhibitors actively seeking partnerships and fresh opportunities in micro-drama production.

Elli Nakamichi / Exhibitor from Canada:

"It’s my first time in Hong Kong. It’s my first time at the film market as well. We’re very interested in that. That’s why we’re here, to speak with people. We’ll probably have a meeting tomorrow with someone who’s into the vertical and short film. We’re very excited to explore that avenue of things."

George Ng / Hong Kong Director and Producer:

"Overseas, micro dramas have become very popular, but they haven’t yet reached their peak. We hope our productions can expand into international markets and be seen by a wider global audience."

As interest grows, companies are sharpening their international strategies.

Ms. Xu / General Manager, Jiuyang Film and Television Media (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd.:

"We are seeing growing interest in Chinese-language dramas in overseas markets. Hong Kong is a very important market for our overseas distribution business. FILMART brings in clients from many countries and this year alone, we have already scheduled meetings with clients from more than 20 countries.

We are planning distribution strategies for both long-form and short-form content. The emergence of short dramas represents a structural shift. They align with today’s audience viewing habits and consumption patterns allowing us to meet the needs of different markets and clients."

As a major hub for content exchange, Hong Kong continues to play a vital role in connecting global markets and supporting international distribution.
