China-built light rail trains are set to play a key role in transporting fans during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the growing presence of Chinese rail technology in Mexico’s urban transit network.
A total of 115 light rail trains manufactured by a Chinese company are now in operation across Mexico, providing efficient and environmentally friendly transport services. During the five-week tournament, the trains are expected to carry more than 1.25 million passengers daily.
In Mexico City, the modern rail system will connect the city centre with the iconic Azteca Stadium, which will host the opening match of the expanded tournament. Designed to operate in the capital’s high-altitude environment and seasonal rainy conditions, the trains feature regenerative braking technology and low-noise ventilation systems that enhance efficiency while reducing energy consumption.
Beyond Mexico City, Chinese rail transit solutions are also supporting transport networks in World Cup host cities Monterrey and Guadalajara, helping ensure smooth travel for visitors as Mexico stages 13 matches during the tournament.
