[Global Connect] US Embraces China’s Fast-Growing Short-Drama Format
: :

Chinese micro-dramas are gaining ground in the United States, as their fast-paced storytelling, vertical format and innovative business model are increasingly embraced by local creators and major studios.

Typically running for just one to two minutes, the dramas pack stories with rapid plot twists and cliffhangers, offering a sharp contrast to traditional, slower-paced television formats. Their production model is also being adopted, with shorter cycles and real-time audience data enabling creators to refine content quickly.

The approach is moving beyond simple content translation. Chinese short-drama companies are working with U.S. film and television professionals to develop local stories while introducing new production workflows and commercial models.

The U.S. short-drama market is expanding rapidly. Monthly active users rose from 26 million in 2024 to 66 million in 2025, while revenue is expected to reach about $1.5 billion in 2026 and nearly $2 billion next year.

Hollywood studios are also taking notice, with Fox Entertainment planning more than 200 vertical-screen projects with a short-drama company. AI is further supporting this emerging, efficiency-driven production model.
