The Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships is set to return with a record-breaking prize pool, bringing world-class action to the Hong Kong Coliseum from September 9 to 14. As a BWF World Tour Super 500 event, the tournament also carries the prestigious ‘M’ Mark designation awarded by the Hong Kong government, highlighting its significance in the city’s sporting calendar.
More than 300 athletes from 20 countries and regions will take part, including 27 homegrown talents. Stars to watch include Paris Olympic Men’s Singles champion Viktor Axelsen, world No. 1 Shi Yuqi, as well as Hong Kong’s own mixed doubles champions Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet, and men’s singles star Lee Cheuk-yiu.
With a record US$500,000 (HK$3.9 million) prize fund, the event is gaining momentum on the international circuit. Commissioner for Sports George Tsoi Kin-pan noted its consistent appeal to elite athletes, including Olympic medallists, and said fans can expect thrilling performances and an unforgettable experience.
