Hong Kong swimming star Siobhan Haughey delivered an impressive performance in Shenzhen on Thursday night, powering to gold in the women’s 200-metre freestyle with a commanding time of 1:54.85.
Starting in lane five, Haughey surged ahead from the opening strokes and never relinquished her lead, securing not only her first National Games gold but also Hong Kong’s first-ever swimming gold at the event.
Her triumph brings Hong Kong’s gold medal tally at this year’s Games to three, a milestone that breaks a record standing for more than two decades. Previously, the Hong Kong team had won two golds in the 2001, 2009, 2017, and 2021 editions.
Haughey’s victory also earns her HK$750,000 under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme. She is set to dive back into action on Friday for the women’s 100-metre freestyle heats, as the National Games continue through 21 November.
