Siobhan Haughey and Ian Ho Yen-tou delivered a golden weekend for Hong Kong at the 15th National Games. On Saturday night in Shenzhen, Haughey powered to her second title with a commanding win in the women’s 100-metre freestyle, touching in 52.89 seconds after a 25.51 turn. Already the 200-metre freestyle champion, she became the first Hong Kong athlete to claim multiple individual golds at a single National Games and will receive her second HK$750,000 award under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme.
A day later, Ho made history in the men’s 50-metre freestyle, winning in a Hong Kong record 21.71 seconds, the city’s first-ever men’s swimming gold at the Games. Starting from lane five, he burst off the blocks and held firm to finish 0.46 seconds ahead of Liaoning’s Chen Hao. His breakthrough victory earns him a HK$750,000 incentive bonus and lifts Hong Kong’s gold medal tally to seven.
