Hong Kong is set to accelerate its green transition over the next five years, with measures spanning cleaner transport, energy, hydrogen development and ecological conservation under the city’s first Five-Year Plan.
The plan targets an end to new registrations of fuel-propelled private cars, including hybrids, by 2035 or earlier. A ChaoJi charging demonstration station will be completed in 2027, while fast chargers are expected to reach 4,000 by 2030 and around 10,000 by 2035, supporting about 500,000 electric vehicles.
Smart and Green Mass Transit Systems will also begin construction progressively from 2027 in Kai Tak, East Kowloon, Hung Shui Kiu and the South Island Line (West).
Hong Kong will raise zero-carbon energy to about 60% to 70% of its electricity-generation fuel mix by 2035 and establish a green and low-carbon hydrogen certification system in 2027. Meanwhile, at least 40% of land and 20% of marine areas will remain protected by 2030, alongside stronger cross-border ecological conservation.
