[Inno & Tech] New Robot Sprinter Smashes 100m Record

At Zhejiang University’s Sci-Tech Center, a compact quadruped robot stole the spotlight. Measuring 1 meter long, 60 centimeters wide, and 65 centimeters tall, the robot—named Bai Xi (White Rhinoceros)—sprinted 100 meters in 16.33 seconds, breaking the previous Guinness World Record of 19.87 seconds held by Korea’s “Hound.”

The development team says Bai Xi bridges a classic trade-off: speed versus load-bearing capacity. Alongside a sturdy metal frame, it carries an intelligent control system that models forces and determines optimal motion strategies. The robot can reach speeds of about 8 m/s and handle payloads of up to 100 kg.

Three years of R&D paid off: Bai Xi has been tested more than ten thousand times across rubble, sand, steps, and slopes to hone its agility and stability. With buyers already expressing interest, the team plans further iterations—aiming to turn a showy sprinter into a practical workhorse for real-world tasks.
