Guangzhou, known as the “City of Smart Vehicles,” has taken automotive intelligence to new heights. Just how advanced is it?
Recently, an L3 autonomous vehicle was tested on rural roads around the city. With only a route set in advance, the car handled the entire journey smoothly—slowing down steadily at blind spots and sharp turns, proceeding only after ensuring safety, and managing stops, starts, and turns at traffic lights with seamless precision—demonstrating how mature Guangzhou’s autonomous driving technology has become.
Autonomous minibuses have already operated on 30 self-driving routes, covering over 2.52 million kilometers with a flawless zero-accident record. This month, L4 autonomous minibuses will be introduced on a new tourist route, allowing passengers to take in the city’s landmarks from the comfort of a self-driving vehicle.
In logistics, the first batch of 20 driverless delivery vehicles began road tests in January. Equipped with high-precision environmental perception, intelligent path planning, and coordinated safety controls, these vehicles can operate around the clock at less than 20 percent of the cost of traditional delivery methods—significantly improving efficiency and reducing costs.
