China's Moonshot AI has released the full model weights of its Kimi K3 on Hugging Face, making the 2.8-trillion-parameter system the world's largest open-weight AI model available for free download, fine tuning and self-deployment.
Featuring a one million token context window and a Mixture of Experts architecture that activates around 50 billion parameters per token, Kimi K3 delivers competitive performance across multiple AI benchmarks while giving developers greater flexibility beyond proprietary API services.
The launch sparked strong demand, with Moonshot temporarily suspending new subscriptions to prioritise existing paying users after a surge in usage strained its computing capacity. While the company offers competitively priced API access, deploying the full model still requires substantial computing resources, limiting self-hosting to organisations with advanced infrastructure.
The release highlights China's growing push for open-weight AI development, with Moonshot also reportedly exploring a Hong Kong initial public offering.
