China is accelerating the development of major science infrastructure, with new facilities under construction and existing projects driving breakthroughs in astronomy and fundamental research.
The country now has more than 70 national-level science facilities either in operation or under construction, ranking second worldwide. Several have reached world-leading standards, with major research clusters established in Beijing's Huairou District, Shanghai's Zhangjiang area, Hefei in Anhui Province, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Recent discoveries have highlighted the impact of these facilities. Scientists using the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) identified the Milky Way's most powerful known particle accelerator in a binary star system within the constellation Cygnus. Meanwhile, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has resumed observations after maintenance, having discovered nearly 1,300 pulsars since 2016. China also plans to launch a new generation of major science facilities by 2030 to further strengthen its research capabilities.
