Brain-controlled robots are bringing the concept of “mind control” closer to reality at this year’s World Robot Conference in Beijing, showcasing advances in human-computer interaction and rehabilitation.
Among the highlights is a wheelchair controlled by a wearable, non-invasive brain-computer interface. Users can guide the wheelchair and operate a robotic arm and hand by decoding their brain signals, offering greater independence in everyday activities and supporting rehabilitation.
Another exhibit combines brain-computer technology with art and psychology. A small forehead sensor captures brainwave data, which is translated into personalised artwork that can also provide insights into a visitor’s emotional state.
The technologies emerged from the Brain-Controlled Robot Competition of the 2026 World Robot Contest, highlighting the growing convergence of robotics and brain-computer interfaces among Chinese research teams.
The conference is also providing a platform for researchers and companies to connect, helping accelerate the development of brain-computer technologies from research laboratories into practical applications.
