A China-led international standard for audio signal sensors in autonomous driving has been officially released, marking a major step towards improving vehicle safety in complex traffic environments. The standard fills a global gap in audio sensor interface specifications, providing autonomous driving systems with standardised “auditory” signals to better perceive their surroundings. Audio sensors can detect and identify a wide range of sounds, including sirens from ambulances, fire trucks and police cars, vehicle horns, collisions, reverse alerts, road noise from wind and rain, and sounds generated by the vehicle itself. By enabling vehicles to detect the direction and distance of priority vehicles through sound before they are visually identified, the technology can support faster responses. Combined with visual perception, it could help autonomous vehicles respond more effectively to situations such as giving way to an approaching ambulance. The new standard is expected to accelerate the development and refinement of audio-based autonomous driving technologies while strengthening safety in increasingly complex road environments.
