[Green Tech] Hong Kong Strengthens Green Transition With Battery Recycling Plant

Hong Kong is set to strengthen its green transport infrastructure with the launch of its first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling facility at Tuen Mun EcoPark this June.

The new facility will enable retired EV batteries to be processed locally, recovering valuable materials and supporting a more circular approach to resource use as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow across the city.

The move comes as authorities anticipate a sharp increase in end-of-life batteries in the coming years. With EV batteries typically lasting between five and ten years, the volume of retired batteries is projected to rise from around 1,300 tonnes in 2026 to approximately 6,700 tonnes by 2030.

To support sustainable battery management, the government is also exploring a comprehensive traceability system. The proposed mechanism would track EV batteries throughout their lifecycle, from import and maintenance to recycling, while enhancing oversight and promoting responsible disposal practices.
