Guangzhou continues to promote the advanced concept of resource recycling. At Pearl River Park in the city center, a green waste recycling system has been established to convert fallen branches and leaves into soil conditioners that nourish the environment. Now, the park has expanded its efforts by partnering with local coffee shops to turn discarded coffee grounds into garden fertilizer.
With the growing number of coffee shops in Guangzhou, large quantities of coffee grounds are generated every day. Far from being waste, these grounds can serve as high-quality fertilizer, improving soil structure, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing soil organic matter by 15–25%. The park now regularly collects coffee grounds from several cafés in and around the park, mixes them with green waste in specific proportions, and transforms the blend into nutrient-rich soil that is returned to the environment.
According to environmental groups, processing one ton of coffee grounds can reduce emissions by approximately 100 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent. As a demonstration site for the circular use of garden waste and coffee grounds, Pearl River Park serves as a model for the large-scale recycling and reuse of coffee grounds.
