Doris Ngan, Miniature Artist
“The most challenging part is this qipao (a traditional Chinese dress). This is part of Tang Wei’s (a famous Chinese celebrity) role in a film. There isn't a small piece of cloth like this in the movie. So, I had to find a piece of cloth and carve the patterns myself.”
A lot of research and meticulous attention to the tiniest of details have been invested into crafting these celebrity miniatures. It's a blend of “household name” celebs from the Chinese entertainment world, such as Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, Tang Wei, Li Bingbing, and more.
Ngan carefully stitched their mini, colourful qipaos, a traditional Chinese dress, from tiny fabric scraps.
They are also paired with tiny floral buttons, handbags, and high heels of delicate craftsmanship.
Set against the backdrop of the historic Po Pan Teahouse, an emblem of Hong Kong nostalgia, Ngan strived to recreate these figurines as closely to real life as possible, down to the smallest detail, such as each stroke of the hair and every little facial feature.
Ngan hoped that her labour of love is more just art, but serves as a “time capsule” for the younger generation in Hong Kong, reminding them of their tradition and heritage.
