The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) will screen 4K digitally restored versions of Stephen Chow’s “A Chinese Odyssey Part One - Pandora’s Box” and “A Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Cinderella” on October 25, marking World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
The two 1995 comedy classics, both starring Chow and directed by Jeff Lau, are among the HKFA’s “100 Must-See Hong Kong Movies”. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, the films put a playful spin on the story while blending comedy with romance.
The 4K restoration was completed in 2025 using the films’ original negatives, Cantonese soundtracks and subtitle negatives provided by the copyright holder, bringing the films closer to their original theatrical quality.
The screenings will also feature post-screening talks with special effects director Andy Ma and film critic Thomas Shin. The films will be shown in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.
