With under a month to go before the opening of China’s 15th National Games, Guangzhou is bursting with colour and excitement. Streets, landmarks, and public spaces across the city are adorned with the Games’ emblem and beloved mascots, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and tourists alike.

The mascots – Xiyangyang and Lerongrong, inspired by the Chinese white dolphin – have become the talk of the town, dazzling crowds as they light up the Guangzhou International Media Port along the Pearl River. “I think the mascots are very adorable,” shared a visitor surnamed Zhou with a Chinese news outlet. “Against the backdrop of Guangzhou’s night skyline, they truly bring out the city’s unique charm.”

Taking place from November 9 to 21, the Games will feature 34 competitive and 23 mass sports events. Most competitions will be held across Guangdong Province, with Hong Kong and Macao co-hosting select events including golf, table tennis, fencing, and beach volleyball.
