Hong Kong is embracing new horizons in drone technology as it takes part in the inaugural model aircraft events at the 15th National Games. The Games hosted their first mass-participation model aircraft competition, with Hong Kong fielding a 20-strong delegation selected by the Hong Kong China Drone Sports Association (HKDSA). The team’s involvement reflects the city’s growing ambition to nurture drone talent and strengthen industry collaboration.
HKDSA chairman Andy Chau Wai-kit said the introduction of these events is shifting public perceptions and deepening regional ties. “Through these competitions, people realise that drones can be used for sports and thus greatly enhance interactions within the Greater Bay Area,” he noted.
Drones also played a vital role beyond the sporting arena. A dedicated drone unit of the Hong Kong Police Force deployed more than 600 devices for venue surveys, risk assessments, and high-altitude patrols. Their wide-ranging use at the Games is seen as a catalyst for Hong Kong’s future in drone innovation and the fast-growing low-altitude economy.
