Guangdong has launched China’s first national road‑air integrated testing centre, marking a major step for autonomous vehicles and flying cars. Officially opened on 20 March, the 573-hectare site combines approved airspace with road testing facilities, providing the Greater Bay Area with a flagship proving ground.
Jointly developed by five partners, including the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute and GAC Group, the centre features a “three-in-one” design integrating low-altitude operations, test tracks, and laboratories. It can handle over 100 scenarios for autonomous vehicles and eVTOL aircraft, with road speeds up to 280 km/h and flight heights up to 1,200 metres.
Key infrastructure includes an 8.5-kilometre high-speed loop, a 300-metre dynamic plaza, multiple take-off and landing pads, and advanced 5G monitoring systems. Already in use, the site hosted China’s first fully autonomous durability test for an L4 Robotaxi in July 2025. The centre supports Guangdong’s plan to build a low-altitude economy exceeding 300 billion yuan by 2026.
