[GBA Thrills] Hong Kong Opens HZMB Access to More Drivers
: :

Hong Kong is broadening access to the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB), marking its most significant update to cross-boundary driving arrangements with Macau since the bridge opened in 2018.

From 7 to 20 May, the Transport Department will accept applications for 1,400 three-year permits for non-commercial Hong Kong private cars. This includes 900 newly agreed quotas with Macau and 500 reallocated from expiring permits. Notably, 400 permits fall under a new “open” category, removing previous requirements such as proof of business or employment ties in Macau.

Eligible applicants, Hong Kong permanent residents or locally registered firms, must meet standard conditions, including vehicle ownership and Macau insurance. Successful applicants, selected by lottery, can begin travelling as early as 13 July, with permits valid until 2029 and allowing multiple trips.

The move aims to better utilise the bridge’s capacity and make cross-border driving a more accessible, everyday option, with strong demand widely anticipated.
