Hong Kong’s beloved Sunbeam Theatre is making a triumphant comeback this Saturday (Aug 16) with a brand-new chapter as “Sunbeam Whampoa”. After closing its doors in March, the iconic venue has been revived and reimagined, blending its rich legacy with a fresh and modern vibe.
Spanning 50,000 square feet, the new Whampoa space features four themed cinemas boasting 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos sound, and a total of 1,200 seats. Opening festivities will include screenings of timeless classics like “Gone with the Wind” and “The Godfather”, alongside 13 showings of the fan-favourite anime film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle”.
First opened in 1972 and known for classics like “The Flower Princess”, the Sunbeam Theatre was the heart of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. The revived venue promises to honour its heritage while becoming a new cultural hub, with plans to host local artists and theatre groups in the near future.
