An exhibition celebrating the cultural, historical and technological impact of games has opened at the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery at City University of Hong Kong, marking the gallery’s 10th anniversary.

Running until 25 October 2026, The Power of Play is curated by Professor Espen Aarseth, Dean of the University’s School of Creative Media. Through six themed sections, the exhibition explores how games have evolved from ancient rituals to today’s digital experiences, highlighting their role as a powerful form of cultural expression and human interaction.

Visitors can discover Reimagining Senet, inspired by a 5,000-year-old Egyptian board game, explore a retro gallery revisiting early video games, navigate immersive virtual reality labyrinths, and examine the evolution of competitive gaming into global esports.

Interactive installations include Buckets of Fun, where teams control industrial robotic arms in a collaborative challenge, while a dedicated Minecraft showcase demonstrates how player creativity has transformed the game into a platform for building communities, recreating landmarks and inspiring new ideas across borders.
