[HK Thrills] Chinese Aircraft Carrier Shandong Makes Historic Visit to Hong Kong
: :

The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, accompanied by its strike group, entered Hong Kong waters on Thursday morning for a five-day visit—marking the first time the country’s fully domestically built carrier has visited the city.

During its stay, the Shandong will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday while anchored outside Victoria Harbour to the west. Visitors will have the chance to explore designated areas, view fighter jets and helicopters, and observe training displays. Additionally, the guided-missile destroyer Zhanjiang and the guided-missile frigate Yuncheng will be accessible to the public at Stonecutters Island Naval Base over the weekend.

The event will feature interactive activities, including military experience sessions, training demonstrations, and national defense lectures—offering Hong Kong residents a unique opportunity to witness the achievements of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) up close.

The Shandong is the first conventionally powered aircraft carrier to be independently designed, built, and equipped by China. It was commissioned in Sanya, Hainan, in December 2019. Its deck is comparable in size to two standard football fields, standing 20 stories tall and housing more than 3,000 cabins. The carrier can accommodate up to 44 aircraft, including J-15 fighter jets, Z-18 helicopters, and various support aircraft.

Tickets to visit the ship were snapped up within a minute earlier this week, prompting various strategies among those hoping to catch a glimpse of the vessels. Popular sightseeing spots include the West Kowloon Cultural District, Peng Chau, Kennedy Town, Tsing Yi, the Disneyland pier, Central piers, Ma Wan, and Stonecutters Bridge.
