[Inno & Tech] Smooth Trials Drive Hong Kong Closer to Autonomous Transport Future

Hong Kong is expanding its push into autonomous driving, with the Transport Department (TD) issuing a new pilot licence to allow ten self-driving vehicles to operate in Cyberport. A few of them will begin running soon on designated routes within the campus at set times.

It’s not the first time the city has given the green light to AVs. Since late 2024, road tests have been carried out in North Lantau, while small-scale passenger trials were introduced on Airport Island earlier this year. Officials say the trials have gone smoothly, with the vehicles showing reliable and stable performance.

All licensed AVs display official identification labels so they can be recognised by other road users. The TD says safety remains the top priority, but is also inviting more companies and organisations to apply for a pilot license to further advance the technology.

With steady progress and broader trials now underway, Hong Kong is positioning itself for a future where autonomous vehicles could become part of everyday transport sooner than expected.
