[Inno & Tech] XPeng Targets Driverless Future with New L4 Robotaxi

Guangzhou is accelerating its ambitions in autonomous mobility, as Chinese EV maker XPeng unveiled what it describes as the country’s first mass-produced Level-4 robotaxi developed entirely with in-house technology.

The first vehicle recently rolled off the production line at Xpeng’s Guangzhou headquarters, marking a significant step toward large-scale commercial autonomous transport. Built on the company’s new GX platform, the robotaxi is designed to operate in designated urban areas without human intervention.

Powering the vehicle is Xpeng’s proprietary Turing computing platform, featuring four self-developed AI chips that deliver around 3,000 TOPS of computing power. Combined with an advanced sensor system and redundant steering, braking and power controls, the vehicle is engineered to meet China’s evolving L4 autonomous driving standards.

Xpeng received Guangzhou’s road-testing permit for L4 intelligent connected vehicles earlier this year and plans to begin pilot robotaxi services in the second half of 2026. The company aims to scale production to hundreds or even thousands of units within 18 months, with fully driverless operations targeted for 2027.
